It is the most delicious and easiest Daal . This is a perfect vegan treat .
Khatti Daal is one of the simple and Delicious food to serve with boiled white rice. You can prepare it for lunch, dinner or any get together with shami/ palak gosht or tala hva gosht.

- 4 tbsp Masoor daal/ red lentil
- 2 medium Tomato
- 1&1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp Red Chilly Powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 3 cloves Garlic
- 2 1inch pieces Ginger
- 1&1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp Tamarind/Imli
- 1 cup water
- 3 Green Chilies
- 2 tbsp Chopped Cilantro/Coriander
For Tadka
- 1/3 cup Oil /ghee
- 4 cloves Garlic
- handful Curry Leaves
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 4-5 Dry red Chillies
Wash and soak the Daal in 1cup water for 5 minutes.
In another bowl wash tamarind and soak in 1cup water. keep aside.
In a pan or pressure cooker add washed Daal with water and boil for 2min.Remove the foam and throw the water.
Now the Daal is clean add 1&1/2cup water, chopped tomatoes, ginger and garlic, cumin seeds, salt, red chilly powder and turmeric powder. Cover the lid and pressure cook for 5min. If you're cooking in a pan cover and cook Daal for 15 minutes on low flame .
When the Daal is cooked and soft using a blender or Daal ghotni mash the Daal.
Strain water from the tamarind bowl and add it to your dal. You need to let the dal cook for at least 10 mins to allow the tamarind water to cook.
Add chopped coriander and green chillies.Check for salt and add if needed. Add water to adjust the consistency of Daal. Takeout your daal in a serving dish and start preparing for tadka. For tadka Heat oil in a pan & fry some garlics, chilies, onions, cumin seeds, mustards seeds and curry leaves until they are nice and golden. Then you add them directly on top of your dal and cover immediately & let it rest for 5min. Serve Hot with white rice.
